Soft Pet

Soft spots in the skin of our pet turtle?

We have two red eye slider turtles as pets. Both are small and live in an aquarium glass. Both are very active and eat very well. We feed them once a day with some pellets for turtles Tetra. We have a sunny window, so we let them outdoor running for apx. one hour per day. Recently they have developed some small soft spot on the bottom of their shells. Not near a vet and I'm hoping to get some simple tips on how we can help. Indeed, we have some smooth rocks in the aquarium so you can leave the water and dry. Does problem is a diet or lack of sun or both? Thanks for any help.

Your turtle shell should be hard and solid, except for turtles softshell. You should not be able to push dents or find the patches smooth. The most common cause of a soft shell is the lack of calcium or vitamin D3. They can get calcium through their food, and vitamin D3 by sunlight or UVB rays. Be patient, this could take a long time to heal.
