Rhodesian Ridgebacks - Lion Dogs

Cornelius Van Rooyen was a well known hunter who lived in Southern Rhodesia in the late nineteenth century. He was particularly well known for lion hunting, which was causing the need for a special type of dog. Maybe it was the greatest form of stalking their prey which led want dogs that warned of just such an occasion.

My friend lives in Van Rooyen's Rest, a farm of 1000 acres on the outskirts of the town of Plumtree. The farm was named after Cornelius Van Rooyen who had settled there after retiring from the game very active career, many years earlier. He was a hunter lion was well known and this aspect of his career that involved him in the breed of dogs known as Rhodesian Ridgebacks. Mr Van Rooyen also seems to have played a role in the perpetuation of the race - his intention seems to have been confined to the breeding of dogs to help with hunting, no farming for playing sake.

Hunting in the early days of Rhodesia was both a sport and a means to provide food. Dogs were used to track and Harry the dam. Whatever Mr Van Rooyen of reasons were a lion hunting, both men and women make formidable opponents lion.

The story goes that Cornelius had visited nearby Hope Fountain Mission, which at that time was in the hands of the Rev. Charles Helm who had brought with him from the Swellendan Cape region of South Africa two dogs of the construction of small and medium-sized, brown, straight hair with a crest marked otherwise: hair extends along the spine, shoulder top almost to the base of the tail. They were probably derived from a race of people or property of the Khoikhoi, indigenous to this part of Africa, crossed with a larger more robust type imported from Europe.

Cornelius crossed their own hunting dogs with the Rev. Helm establish a guy who became known as Leon Van Rooyen dogs, large, muscular, intelligent and energetic, while retaining the characteristic ridge of hair that later earned them the official title of Rhodesian Ridgebacks. Often are dark tan with a short coat, do not shed much hair and virtually no odor. Usually, only bark if they have good reason.

The actual way in which the dog was used to hunt lions appears to have been for use in rotation packages to harass the lion and bring it to bay, when you could be fired at close range.

The breeding program Rhodesian Ridgebacks still exists in South Africa and in other stock markets around the world, although unfortunately no longer seems to exist in Zimbabwe (formerly called Rhodesia).

It is not really a dog water, but is adaptable so if you have a Rhodesian Ridgeback and go anywhere with it in water, you may be interested in buying a life jacket or flotation device to him - these days commonly known by the initials PFD. They come in various sizes and shapes to protect it from possible unforeseen long periods in water. Of course, it is important that you take the precaution of wearing one.

My Doberman like water?

I have a 3 month old female Doberman Pinscher. I read online that normally dobermans enjoy the water, but when I give her a bath she complains and definitely hates me! We live in Hawaii and have a boat, we carry with us a day, but do not want to be miserable. We will a sand bank where he could stand and walk around, plus there are plenty of dogs out there to play, but the water is sometimes cool.
