Green White Light: OLED lighting Explanation
OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diodes) are materials that emit light when current passes through them. OLED is used today to streamline and fine example of MP3 players, mobile phones and other devices, and the first television OLED can be bougt Sony. Because OLEDs emit light, it is also possible to use technology to create white light.
OLEDs are very efficient energy and can be very thin. An OLED lamp is actually a thin film of material that emits bright white light. Because OLEDs can be flexible or transparent, even exciting new designs OLED lamp are possible.
OLEDs are also a source of light "Green". Not only are super efficient, but OLEDs do not contain any "bad" metals such as mercury, which is present in efficient lamps CFL. So really OLED light source future, when considering all things.
In April 2008, OSRAM has announced the world of OLED lamp first. It was designed by lighting designer Ingo Maurer, uses 10 OLED light panels, size 132 x 33 mm. The lamp bulb is really thin OLED square sheets that emit light. This lamp is more of a prototype of a commercial product - only 25 were made, and the price is € 25,000. But it sure is an important milestone on the road for OLED lighting.
Several companies are working towards white OLED light products. GE is the hope of obtaining products for the year 2010 and is planning OSRAM products for 2011-12, although, as we have said already announced its first OLED lamp in 2008.
Philips is already shipping samples of OLED lighting and equipment, and expects commercial products from 2009. Other companies involved in lighting Konica Minolta's white OLED (plans to have products for the year 2011), Universal Display (WOLED technology), and the EU is funding several projects Kodak.The lighting OLED, while in Japan, some companies have joined forces to create Lumiotec - A joint venture to explore possibilities for OLED lamps.
We remains to be seen which company (or companies) will win the race for OLED lighting. But we are seeing more and more evidence OLED will play an important role in our future "green light."
