What every dog owner should know about Holiday Safety
Copyright (c) 2007 Jennifer Koretsky
The Christmas holiday is coming quickly! While you're busy decorating and preparing your home for guests, here are some important tips to keep your dog safe this season.
The Christmas Tree
Tinsel, small ornaments and garments are major hooks choking hazard for dogs. It is best to completely avoid the mesh and keep small ornaments high on the tree, out of reach of the dog. Also, make sure that there are street decorations hooks on the floor!
If your family has a real tree (as opposed to an artificial tree), it is best to block the area around the tree with a screen or door. Many dogs get sick from drinking water of trees and eating pine needles. Vacuum the area around the tree regularly.
Holiday Guests
It's exciting to family and friends during the holidayseven for your dog! However, there are certain precautions you should take the company to take over.
Dogs can easily slip out the door when people are constantly coming and going. Make sure your dog wears an identification tag with your phone number, even if it is a microchip. Not everyone who finds a lost dog knows it has been documented by a micro-chip.
Guests can worship their dog, but do not let give your dog a food without asking. Especially children may want to give the dog a treathand them safe and monitor treatment to give the dog. Under no circumstances be given to your dog chicken bones or turkey. They are small and are a serious choking hazard. Alternatively, buy a marrow bone in the supermarket as a special gift vacation.
Why you should not give as gifts for dogs
Bringing a new dog in the family is a wonderful thing, especially if you adopt a dog from a shelter. However, giving a dog as a Christmas gift is never a good idea. Regardless of whether the dog is a puppy or an adult, his first days at home should be all about him. The holidays, for most families are too chaotic and occupied by a dog used to his new environment, and may be anxious or fear.
A great idea for families who want to give their children a dog for Christmas gift-wrap is a dog bone. When the child opens, I say that for the new dog I get in a few weeks. Or you may leave a note from Santa explaining that he did not have enough room on his sleigh and comes back with the dog. Animal shelters are flooded every January with the dogs that were given as Christmas giftsso January is a good time to adopt a dog that needs a home.
Finally, it is always good idea to have a phone number of your vet posted in a conspicuous place. Your vet's office should have someone answering the phone 24 / 7.
The most important thing to remember, amid all the chaos of the holidays, you always know where your dog and what he is doing. That way everyone in your home, including family members of four legs, can have a Merry Christmas.

What to do with ungrateful children?
My son has always been very grateful for Christmas insist on trying on clothes and new shoes always say thanks I love .. etc This year was different that will be 4 next week and he was angered by the clothes he was throwing them aside and saying "I do not want the clothes, and fighting a Waggin 'Tails puppy we bought, it was on your list to Santa but he stepped aside and said, "I do not want puppy stupid dog "I was very upset of course I do not know where he heard the word" dumb "maybe from preschool or my little sister when she visits. I told him that he must be grateful and I take back all those present if they do not start behaving. What is a better way to address this or try to change their attittude so I have to go through the same thing next year and next.
Kids will be kids. All he knows is honesty. He did not know how to fake excitement to your satisfaction. Maybe I was in a bad mood when they were opening the gifts. Let him know you bought gifts for him, because not because he wanted to and if it continues to act ungrateful, do not hesitate to take the toys away from him. But remember it's a boy and he knows you have feelings ... You can learn in time.
