Incontinence

Have you stopped taking an aerobics class because they are afraid you may have an accident. Do you worry when it's time to a long car journey on the road with little roadside rest areas. Are you afraid of sneezing, coughing, laughing, even, because you are not sure whether to stay dry.

Do not worry, you're not alone. Help for people suffering from incontinence (HIP), a nonprofit organization in the European Union, South Carolina estimated that at least 12 million and perhaps up to 20 million people in the United States and Canada suffer with urinary incontinence, often in silence. In fact, it is a problem has been recognized only relatively recently in the U.S. as a treatable condition and not merely an inevitable symptom of aging. As a matter of fact, other cultures in recent times seems to have been much more aware of the problem. The ancient Egyptians developed incontinence products, and in Britain around the turn of the century, it was perfectly acceptable for a woman to hold what was called a shoe under her dress to make their needs for a long religious service.

Loss of bladder control is not a disease but a symptom of any of a number of causes. It can affect anyone at any age, from children to elderly, women and men. Women, however, are three times more likely than men to be incontinent, partly due to the physical stresses of childbirth and a reduction of estrogen after menopause. The cause of incontinence can be as minor as an infection caused by a cold or use of certain medications or more medications. Incontinence may also be the result of sagging muscles of the pelvic floor. This set of muscles located on the bottom of the pelvis supports down the internal organs and helps them maintain their shape and function. Labor and certain types of surgery such as hysterectomy in a woman (uterus) or a man in a prostatectomy (removal of the prostate gland) can cause these pelvic floor muscles to be deficient.

Incontinence Exercises help tone and strengthen pelvic floor muscles.) Incontinence is manifested in various forms, and a person may suffer more a form of it. Stress incontinence occurs because of the rigorous activity or spontaneous, such as playing tennis or sneezing. Urge incontinence is characterized by sudden need to go, but may not arrive in time to the bathroom. Over flow incontinence is a bladder full, which starts to drip. And reflex incontinence is characterized by a lack of awareness of the need to urinate (caused by an enlarged prostate, for example), resulting in losses. Here are ways to cope.

Keep a journal: This is very useful in establishing patterns of symptoms, says Katherine Jeter, Ed D, ET, executive director of HIP. By keeping a diary evacuation or uro-register, will have a record of when and urinated on the causes of it. The diary should include: time of day of urination or leakage, the type and amount of fluid intake before it, the amount paid in ounces (pharmacies carry measuring devices to fit right into the toilet) the amount of leakage (small, medium or large), the activity when the losses occurred, and whether or not a need to urinate was present. Keep a journal such for at least four days, if not an entire week before seeing a doctor can help you determine which type of incontinence you have and the course of treatment. When see a doctor, keep a list or vials of any prescription or over the counter medications have been taking, since some medications can cause incontinence.

See what you drink: Experts are not entirely sure why some drinks seem to irritate the lining of the bladder and, as a result, cause bladder leakage. But you may want to eliminate certain substances from your diet or at least reduce your intake of them to see if their control of the urine increases. The caffeine in coffee, for example, can irritate the bladder, and ingredients that give it its distinct aroma cafe (it is also found in decaffeinated varieties) can be irritating, too. Tea, another drink favorite breakfast is not only a diuretic, which means that more water out of the kidneys as it passes through, but also a bladder irritant. (HIP recommends the replacement of grain hot drinks, which is in the coffee aisle of the supermarket and tea.) Citrus fruits and juices, like grapefruit and tomatoes, can be a problem. Carbonated soft drinks can be irritating, too, according to HIP (you might be able to tolerate mineral water, which is not as highly carbonated such as soda). And finally, alcohol should be avoided. Your safest bet: water, perhaps with a slice of lemon for flavor (lemon drops not be sufficient to cause or aggravate citrus incontinence problems).

Try These Juices: Grape juice, cranberry juice, cherry juice, and apple juice are not irritating to the bladder and may, in fact, control the smell of your urine. And surprisingly, the orange juice is an irritant, because it is metabolized by the body in a more alkaline or less acidic, liquid before reaching the bladder, said Jeter.

Keep drinking: Too often, people who suffer incontinence to restrict their fluid intake, believing that the less you eat, the less it will urinate. However, dehydration can occur, says Thelma Wells, Ph.D., RN, FAAN, FRCN, a professor of nursing at the University of Rochester School of Nursing in Rochester, New York. Dehydration can lead to constipation, which in turn can irritate the surrounding nerves, which trigger the bladder to urinate. Incontinence result. Instead of cutting the amount you drink, you set the time baby. Having liquid at fixed intervals during the day will keep your bladder becomes too full or empty as well. The bladder is irritated if the liquid level is too low or too high, say the wells. A normal bladder has about two cups of fluid bladders problem can hold just half a cup or a maximum a liter and a half. If you are in constant vigilance in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom, you can try to lower your intake of fluids between dinner and bedtime, says Wells. Experts suggest that an average intake of fluid from six to ten glasses of 8 ounces a day.

Watch what you eat: Again, experts are not sure why certain foods aggravate the bladder, but you can try cutting these foods to see if it helps, hot spices and foods that are used in, such as curry powder and chili, tomato-based foods, sugar, as honey and corn syrup and chocolate.

Try the recipe for success: If you have constipation, add fiber to your diet can relieve constipation, and in trun, incontinence, here's an easy recipe to make sandwiches that can HIP help. Combine a cup of applesauce, a cup of oat bran and a quarter cup of prune juice. Keep the mixture in the refrigerator or freeze in portions sectioned premeasured ice cube trays. Start with two tablespoons each night, followed by a six-eight oz glass of water or juice (one of the acceptable varieties mentioned above). After seven to ten days, this increase to three tablespoons. Then at the end of the second or third week, increase your intake to four tablespoons. You should start seeing an improvement in their bowel habits in about two weeks. The extra fiber can cause increased gas or bloating, but this fall, after a couple of weeks. Sure to maintain their daily fluid intake, and use this recipe fiber.

Lose weight: Obesity can cause the collapse of muscles, including pelvic floor muscles, which help in proper disposal.

Do not smoke: This is another reason to quit. Nicotine can irritate the bladder, and for heavy smokers, coughing can contribute to incontinence.

Buy a safe: There are numerous products on the market today that will absorb any accident, whether urine or stool, and at the same time, protect your clothing or bedding from moisture. Specially designed reusable disposable briefs, diapers, bags, inserts and protective clothing can add a measure of confidence. For some people, sanitary napkins or panty liners can be an acceptable alternative that provides enough protection. And a new product may be on the market soon. In the next year or two, urethral plugs, which can block the flow of urine during activities daily, will be available in the United States, said Peter K. Sand, MD, associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Northwestern University School of Medicine and director of the Evanston Continence Center Evanston Hospital in Evanston, Illinois. These plugs that are currently used in Europe, can be inserted by the user and then removed by means of a rope.

Have confidence in the way: external collecting devices that are specially designed for use by females or males can the trip a little more comfortable. These urinals on the road, which are also suitable for use by the bed, are available at medical supply stores and pharmacies through mail order and specialty care.

Go for the trip: to empty the bladder before taking a trip of an hour or more, if you have the urge to go or not.

Then we go again: After urination, getting up and sit down again. Then lean forward, which compresses the abdomen and pressure on the bladder to help empty the bladder completely, suggests Wells.

Wear clothing that is easy to remove: Women's Clothing, in particular, can be a problem. Coveralls or unitards can slow down when you're in a hurry to go because these one-piece suits made should be removed from the top down. Ignore these suits or seek other with an opening in the crotch broke for quick and easy removal. Bring extra clothes with you so you can change if an accident occurs. If your clothes happen to stain with urine, soak for three hours in a mixture of one gallon water and one cup of dishwashing detergent.

Weight to the results: when the force resistive exercise is exercised against a weight can be applied to the sphincter muscles of the urethra and rectum, which are important for the recovery of continence, says Wells. Cones that are about the size of a buffer, and come in different weights are designed for use in the vagina (women) or rectum (for men). When you insert a cone, the sphincter muscles must contract in order to hold the weight and dropped it. For a few months and the increased use of variable weights, the muscles pelvic floor should be stronger, says Jeter. These weight sets are available from physicians, who can provide guidance for the use of cones, or stores medical supplies. Read and follow carefully the instructions accompanying the appropriate use for best results. Start by holding the lighter weight for 15 minutes twice a day. Once successful at that weight, the heaviest weight you try the following for the same amount of time. Some versions of These cones come with an electronic feedback system, called perineometer, reporting the amount of pressure being applied cone inserted.

Take control of your muscles every day: To prevent leaks, the contract the pelvic floor muscles when coughing or sneezing or lifting or carrying something. Do standing near the object to be lifted with feet slightly apart, one foot in front of the other. Then, bend the knees, but keeping your back straight. Lean forward slightly as a contract or tighten, the pelvic muscles. Then lift the object.

Beware of tricks Exercise: Carefully investigate any exercise device intended help reduce incontinence. A company may promote the fact that your gadget tone of the pelvic floor muscles, but the device may actually carry a Group muscles attached, if it does nothing. An athlete for use between the thighs, for example, not strengthen pelvic floor muscles. If you are not sure whether a particular athlete will benefit your incontinence problem, do not waste time or money. Check first with your health care provider.
